Strong Emotions - Episode 11

 

          "You are not responsible for my pregnancy? Have you forgotten how you held me that night? You told me that Enny wasn't a woman you can marry, so that was a lie? Have you forgotten the fun we had that night and how you promised to love and cherish me? You are an animal! Fred you are an animal!!".. 
       

         Lola screamed amidst tears, she was dragged away from the parlour by her mother while Alfred held his face with his palm, he wasn't expecting the slap he got from Lola and for the next ten minutes there was a total silence. I sat beside my mum with my arms folded across my chest enjoying the whole drama . My mum looked calmed, she was glad Alfred preferred her daughter over Lola while my dad sat calm, I could see from his look that he wasn't happy with the situation at all while Alfred on the other hand kept staring at the floor as if he was expecting the ground to soothe him and provide a solution to the situation. Mr Williams broke the silence.
       

       "Mr Black Benson,  what will you say to the matter. You need to say something." He said to my dad. 
       

          My dad cleared his voice "  Mr Williams, I have nothing to say

. The poor boy said he is not responsible for your daughter's pregnancy, so definitely he is getting married to my daughter". He said, while my mum nodded her head in agreement. Mr Williams stood up with rage, his eyes turned red and fierce as that of a lion, he clenched his hand in a fist.
       

         "What nonsense!" He roared. "You have been a wolf under a sheep's clothing, I can't believe you could utter this statement. This young man here will never get married to your daughter not if I'm still alive. You know me Benson, you Know what I can definitely do". 
         

        "What will you do to my husband? There's nothing you can do, you are just a coward". Mum shouted back. I held my mum in an attempt to stop her from  confronting Mr Williams when she leapt up from her chair suddenly but it was too late, mum had already lurched at Mr. Williams and was holding on to his Agbada as if he owed her money. Just like a movie , Mrs Williams rushed in to pulled my Mum away from her husband, she gave my mum a slap and before I knew what was happening, they held eachother in pairs. As they kicked, pulled and hurled insult at one another, Lola came towards me with a knife. I stood tranfixed, I was unable to move.
       

        "Lola, don't hurt me...I....beg you". I pleaded with a fright.
       

         "I'm going to end this trash today, Alfred humiliated me  in front of my parents because of you this bitch...." She said with a sneer while she raised the knife high for me in an attempt to stab me. A hand from nowhere jerked the knife away, she turned to see Alfred staring at her with disdain.
       

        "I can't marry a murderer as my wife, I will marry Enny and there is nothing you and your parents can do about it". He said, this time both parents had stopped their fights . Alfred looked at Mr Williams with confidence.
     

       "I'm not responsible for your daughter's pregnancy and she knew it, good day everyone". He said to the amazement of everyone and walked out pulling me along. Everyone watched us without a word. I snatched my hand from his grip when we got into the compound leading to the gate.
       

         "Enny, I love you. Give me a chance to prove my love to you and our unborn baby". He said softly, he wanted to touch my belly but I pushed him away violently.
       

        "Alfred!... please leave me alone. I don't love you and I can't marry you." I retorted, he shook his heard with regret. He held his head as if it wanted to explode.
     

         "What about our baby?". He asked staring at my belly nervously.
         

       "I had a miscarriage yesterday, this pregnancy is not even up to a month so stop being so paranoid." I replied, surprised at my own words, how did I come up with such a brilliant reply without an hesitation and without stammering. Oh Lord! What will I do after this? Anyways I have to solve one problem at a time, I need to get Alfred out of my life.
         

     "Mis- what?...and why didn't you tell me this earlier?". He asked confused.
         

       "I didn't want to bother you. I felt Lola's child will fill the space. So stop denying her pregnancy because you know perfectly well that it's yours." I said with annoyance, he pushed me aside and ran inside. To do what if I may ask ? To beg Lola and her parents I guess and to cut the story short, he ran towards Lola and hugged her. Mr Williams though angry and irritated by what Alfred had earlier said , hid his ego and accepted him as their son in-law right in front of my parents. My mum looked at me in horror, she knew something had happened. I watched as my dad walked to his room while my mum trailed after him. I could see the happiness written on Lola's face when Alfred prostrated to apologise to her parents. She looked at me and smiled, she had accomplished her mission. Mr Williams offered to give Alfred a ride to his house, they have a lot more to discuss in their home. What do they want to talk about which is more than wedding plans, anyways I'm glad they are gone with their troubles. I knew I took a right decision because Alfred is not a man I can marry, he will only make my life miserable. And come to think of it, if I decide to marry Alfred in order to satisfy my parents wish, Lola might kill me , she looked very desperate. I took a courage to walk to my parents room, I need to talk to them, I am their daughter after all.
     

        "Don't you ever step into my room". Dad commanded when I opened the door. He said that because he was angry and the least he can do was to hit me and I know mum won't allow him do such. I walked towards him boldly despite his scary look, mum kept mute, she couldn't take it anymore.
       

       " I want to talk to you both." I said. None of them replied me.
       

        "Mum! dad! You can see Alfred is not the right man for me, he flirts and cheats with different ladies, he was responsible for Lola's pregnancy and he denied it at first but when I told him I had a miscarriage he ran back to her. I can't marry that kind of a man".
     

         " You have a miscarriage? Mum asked with her eyes wide opened. She got up swiftly from the bed and rushed towards to me in an attempt to assess my body.
       

         "I'm fine mum, I said that to see if he truly loves me." Mum hissed , she walked back to sit on her bed. She looked at me with disgust. 
       

         "I'm sorry I didn't prove to be the best child you wanted me to be. I lived a wayward and careless life..." I knelt down in front of them with tears in my eyes, I had caused them so much pain. I was surprised when dad lifted me up, he hugged me, mum joined us in the warm embrace. He looked at me and smiled, I ought to reciprocate but I couldn't help but shed more tears.
       

        "I have forgiven you my child, we will try to...." He held his chest unable to complete his statement, he gasped for air and before we know what was happening, dad had collapsed. 
       

          " Daddy!..." I screamed. Mum ran into her room to pick her phone, she had to call the emergency while I held my dad. Mum's hands trembled when she  tried to dial the emergency number. Dad's body had become cold ,so cold that I wondered whether he was alive or dead.
