George led me into the cab and I couldn’t help but stare at Antonio as he walked slowly towards a waiting bus. George kept smiling at me , he placed his arm across my neck. Judging from the time on my wrist watch we had arrived in Toronto by 4am which is 9am Nigerian local time.

“Welcome to Canada, I couldn’t imagine that I would see you again so soon. You look more beautiful.” He said with a smile that could melt a candle.

” Thanks George so where do you live and work?” I asked eager to know more about his personal life in Canada.

“I’m an Sr Process Engineer at Ria corporation located at Whitby . I live in Addison street in Oshawa city, Ontario.” He said.

“Sr Process Engineer? Interesting so what’s the job all about?.” I was tempted to ask so as to have an insight to what his present financial status would be.

“Senior process engineers evaluate a process efficiency effectiveness, quality, and safety. They then identify any areas that need to be improved or changed, with the ultimate goal being to make a process more efficient and less costly. They are employed at a business or work as independent contractors. Either way, they typically focus on one project at a time to avoid confusion or conflicts that result from multiple concurrent projects and they examine many different areas of a process, which could include chemical interactions, system performance, and equipment designs.” He explained.

“That’s a whole lot of duties, I hope you guys get well paid for all these tasks?” I asked trying to put my feminine witty nature at play

. I need to know how much he is earning.

“Yes they do. They pay us average salary of $98,883 monthly which is approximately35,597,880.00 in Naira . I was also given an official car and the apartment I live in.” He said as if he knew what I was eager to hear. My Lord! 35,597,880.00 in Nigerian Naira? That’s a hell of a lot of money. I smiled to suppress my suprised look, he sensed I was quite impressed but he didn’t say anything pertaining to that.

“I have got an apartment for you at Addison street close to my apartment.”

“But…you shouldn’t have bothered, I have booked a hostel in the campus.”

“Listen Enny, I wouldn’t want you to live in the campus. You won’t have time for me and I won’t be able to see you as I would like to. Don’t worry I will always be there for you, just ask me for anything you would need and I will surely provide it.” I think I have got his plight now, this guy is madly in love with me and that’s because his parents and sister didn’t know we will be together otherwise they would have disclosed to him everything about my pregnancy and how I had lost the baby.

“By the way, what about Alfred?” He asked and I could sense that his voice was filled with jealousy. The emphasis he made on mentioning his name was so prominent that one would think he said it with his mouth wide opened.

“George, can we suspend this talk to another day? You can see I’m stressed out from this journey already, I need to rest.” I said calmly while I placed my head on his shoulder to avoid any suspense.

“Ok dear, as your lordship pleases.”

He dragged me closer and gripped me my waist, I felt scared to look at him because I feared he might kiss me. I have resolved not to get involve in any romance that would lead me to my past. He made several attempts to attract my attention but it was to no avail, I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. We arrived Oshawa at 4:50 am because Oshawa is 49mins drive from Toronto and both are cities in Ontario. George helped me with my loads when we got down from the cab and I was glad he did. I breathe in the fresh air in the new environment I found myself to calm the nerves down.

“Welcome to Adisson street, this is my house, shall we?”, he smiled and stretched his hands towards a Semi-Detached House, these are one of a group of house types that can be called Attached Houses because the individual dwelling units are attached, in some way, to other dwelling units(except its own garage or shed) and it has no dwellings either above it or below it, and the two dwelling units, together, have an open space on all sides. He dragged my luggage along into the house while I followed suit, I marvelled at the interior design, the house has a very simple, casual ambiance and a fresh look, this was obtained through the mixture of bright colours (blue and white) which I knew he chose because he loves Chelsea football club with the right combination of materials. The huge, floor-to-ceiling glass walls and windows in the living room emphasize the views and let in natural light, an oversized wall art was placed behind the wall, there is a monumental bookshelf which delineated the living room and the dining area, a danish modern armchair and ottoman was in front of the fireplace which was surmounted by a mirror and a small framed wall art leaned against the wall instead of being attached to it with screws , the painting looked familiar and I walked towards it to be sure of what I saw, Alas! I saw my portrait glaring at me. I could remember clearly now, he invited a cameraman the day he proposed to me in that hotel when I celebrated my birthday. I gasped, the picture was taken when I stared at George holding the ring.

“How did you get my portrait?

” I asked as if I couldn’t fathom how he got the picture.

“I kept it when you denied my proposal, more of your pictures are in my room.”

“More of my pictures?”

“Are you surprised that I have your pictures or that I love you so much?” I walked past him without uttering a word, I wanted to see more of my pictures. Lilac runs throughout his Mark Sikes bedroom, from the headboard to the wallpaper, the narrow bedroom table fits into the little nook perfectly, and since it’s on the slimmer side, it offered plenty of drawer space for extra storage. The ash coloured rug helped add a neutral counterpoint to the bold colour, the wooden side chair placed beside his bed could function as a seat or as a bedside table with casual pieces like jute rugs, playful striped pillows. The bedroom felt both comfortable and sophisticated decorated with loose linens and a netted pendant light. My legs failed me as I sat on the bed slowly staring at the numerous picture frames of me, I held my mouth with my palm to avoid screaming. ‘George is too obsessed with me’ I thought silently. He walked towards me with a smile, his palms kept in his pocket.

“I think now you will believe that I truly love you”.

“George you are going crazy, why will you have my pictures all over your house.”

“Yes! I’m crazy about you”. He knelt in front of me while he held my palms.

“I love you, can’t you see!….Enny what else do you want me to do so that you can believe that I love you.”

” George I know you do but…”

“But what?….”

“You can’t understand”.

“Then let me understand”. He pleaded. How can I explain my plight to him? How do I make him understand that what happened between Alfred and I was a mistake I regretted doing. I wonder how he will feel when I tell him that I had a pregnancy which ended up in a miscarriage. All these thoughts flew through my brain like an electric current .

“Enny, I know what you are thinking about. Just calm down, l know about everything, rest your head and let me get something for you to eat.” He said calmly, while he placed my head softly on the pillow.

“You know…you know what?” I asked puzzled. He didn’t wait to reply to me , he went straight into the kitchen. Oh Lord! What’s he talking about? Knows about? I’m sure he knew nothing ,he was just trying to cool my nerves down or probably his sister and parents might have told him about it. I hope my coming to Canada won’t be something I would regret after all because I kept falling into my old vomit, I need a breathing space, I need to breathe a fresh air, I don’t want to remember my past but it kept surfacing. I caused it after all, I shouldn’t have informed him about my coming to Canada, well I need to fix this as soon as possible.
