�I am guilty of this offence sir, so I don't need a lawyer. I won't waste your time or my money. I shall just plead guilty and take what's coming to me�. Mrs. Ebere Osita said clearly as soon as lawyer Kelvin settled on the stool in the interview room where he met her. She didn't care that the policewoman who led them in was still at the door and could hear what she said. �Then why did you send for me?� Kelvin asked angrily . �You are only feeling sorry for yourself. Please calm down and tell me about your case�. Kelvin said regretting his annoyance at the suspect. Tears welled up in her eyes, � I took the baby to replace the one I lost twenty years ago. I have been married twice but I have never been able to have any child from both marriages. I'm sure I'm not barren because I had an issue when I was eighteen�, she said in a low tone. �Where is the child now, I mean the one you had?� Kelvin asked as he wiped Mrs. Ebere's eyes with his handkerchief.� I don't know� she answered. �How do you mean? Did the baby die?� Kelvin inquired. �No it didn't die� Mrs. Ebere said. �Then what happened? Tell me your story�. Kelvin requested

. �I was only an innocent and inexperienced young damsel living with my uncle and his family in Onitsha. It was exactly four months to my senior weac examination when I got pregnant. Obinna our neighbor in my uncle�s compound who impregnated me was the first boy I had ever allowed to touch me. My uncle being a catechist in a catholic church and a knight of St. John frowned at my shameful behavior which he said has dragged his name to the mud and tarnished the reputation he had built over the years. He didn�t hesitate to send me back to my poor widow mother in the village. I was to stay with her until the baby was born. I asked my mother if she knew how I could get rid of the pregnancy but she refused to cooperate with me. She told me that she would not share with me the sin of murder by abortion, I thought I would die bearing it .I was the only child of my parents. My mother was not helping the whole situation. She nagged and complained about everything I did. My mother said it was wrong for a girl to terminate her pregnancy all because she wanted to avoid embarrassment. She said that I may never be able to have another one. That was the only time she spoke to me in a mild voice. I was very miserable, so l made up my mind that I was going to leave the village as soon as I had the baby. I was going to leave the baby with my mother and go back to Onitsha. My mother thought otherwise, she said I would have to stay in the village and work to provide for the baby. She said she didn't want me to go and embarrassed his brother with my bastard child and my uncle will lose his job and respect. Should his parishioners know that despite being a catechist and a highly respected knight in the church, he allowed his unmarried cousin to get pregnant under his nose? It was exactly a week after I had my baby.
