“what do you mean by that, abeg check it well, jare”, Mrs Ojo roughly issued out to Andrian, as she picked up the squawking hen beside her. Its cackling sounds were enough to drown one’s thought. Yet , I still think. If I am very observant, which I think I am. This would be the second time, Mrs Ojo would misplaced her thousand naira note. Same person she had always ask to check up for her, only that the manner in which she had asked, was different . She wasn’t taking it lightly this time.
“mum, I have checked, but I can’t find it. Or would you ask Osas to search your wardrobe?”, Andrian shrugged dejectedly.
“Andrian, search for a thousand naira, this is still daytime. A thousand naira note is conspicuous. Be rather fast, because I need to get two tubers of yams from Iya Risi’s stock”, Mrs Ojo voiced, as deep lines of frowns began to edge out. As soon as I saw these, I coyly focused on my laundry work.
“Osas”, Andrian called, as he walked away, “please come and check for mum’s thousand naira note and when you can’t find it. Then we should all ask Deesay”.
I paused. Cold shivers ran down my spines as I gently turned to Andrian. Though, he made sure his voice was audible when he said that, he did better when he fastened his strides to be beyond my reach.
If he were to be within my reach, what would I do? Well, I would only ask him just a question and nothing more, the question would be-  how does mum’s room looks like? Because I have never entered there

. Mum knows this, Osas knows this, even Andrian could attest to this, because it is always under lock and key.
Osas marched on to search for the money. Apparently to confirm Andrian’s  foolhardiness. Osas is mature and thoughtful for his age, though he shares the laziness ties with his younger brother. I wouldn’t trade his good aspects for the unknown. At least, I am happy that his kind of personality is the first child.
“Osas, check well. I didn’t even fold the money. And when you do, please return the key at where it should be”, Mrs Ojo called out after him. She was confident, I was confident that he would see it. But when he came out few minutes later, saying that he had to ransack everywhere and yet couldn’t find the money. Then I knew that a rare form of confusion swallowed me. One , that I have never been in.
“please ask Deesay, mum”, Andrian supplied as balls of sweats spiraled round his bare shoulders.
“why should mum ask her, does she even know where the key is?”, Osas defended, as he watched his brother coldly.
“now, Deesay”, Mrs Ojo started, “do you know…..”
“mum, I don’t think…..”
“you don’t think what. Where my money is involved! You think I shouldn’t suspect anyone. My goodness! This is the second time, a thousand naira would go missing in this house. I allowed the first to be swept under carpet and you think, this second time isn’t worth suspecting?”, Mrs Ojo boiled with anger. I could feel the raw anger directed at me as she asked again.
“Deesay”, Mrs Ojo called.
“yes mum”.
“good. I want to know, if at anytime, you came across a thousand naira note. Whether at the sitting room or the kitchen, anywhere?”, Mrs Ojo asked. I was very relieved when she didn’t mention her room. At least, she was sure that it is out of bound for me.
“I haven’t seen any”, I replied. To Andrian’s consternation, I could feel his stares frightening me. But they did worked well to make me voice the truth- that is the one thing I know how to do.
