Devils In Disguise - Episode 4

 

ACT TWO SCENE TWO

Korsakoff and Anna sits on the neat sofa, waiting in anticipation for the expectant visitors on the way. Though their faces is clad in smiles and affections, the atmosphere around the home is surrounded by gloom. Few minutes later, the bell alarm sounded, the maid rushes to the door and opens, entering chronologically is Jacob, his wife Lypi and their son Alexander, all clad in glamorous blue suits and gown.Korsakoff walks to them clad in stupendous cheerfulness.They exchange pleasantries.
{KORSAKOFF}: It's good to see my old friend after such a long time.I once thought you had been lost in the moon or become a fugitive that you have decided to desert and avoid me like a plague.
{JACOB}: No one had the power to make me a fugitive in my Father's land, not the Kings, the Princes, the President and the Governors.I have just been a little busy, busier than I ever thought.
{KORSAKOFF}: Not enough reason not to pay your old friend a visit. (To Lypi) look at you, the ever glowing wife of my friend . Good to see you.(He takes her right hand in his and kisses it).
{LYPI}:Thank you. Good to see you both, Mr Korsakoff and my good friend Anna.
{ANNA}:My pleasure.
{KORSAKOFF}: I presume this is a family gathering so let us celebrate it and discuss later.
{ALEXANDER}: I pray for it to be pleasingly good.Where is Rebecca.It seems she is still upset.
{ANNA}:Oh no she isn't on the contrary. I havn't seen her up today.Probably, she is still locked up in her room.I will send the maid to check up on her.
{KORSAKOFF}: The sumptuous lunch is ready

. I guess we are all hungry but not as hungry as I am.(Laughter fills the air, enter a maid).
{MAID}: Excuse me ma'am but I found no one in your daughter's room.It's empty.
{KORSAKOFF}: What! Where has she gone off to? No one saw her leave the house or did any of you see?
{MAID}:No, Sir, we all had been working on the outside so there was no way she would have passed without us noticing.
{ALEXANDER}: Then, we should send word to the police.I can't loose my Rebecca.
{KORSAKOFF}: Nobody will.She hasn't gone very far.That I believe.I will get in touch with the police. Tell the others to organise a search.(Exit the maid and enter a male guard hurriedly, panting few seconds later).
{GUARD}: Sir, I spotted Miss Rebecca talking to her visitor in the lobby.I couldn't see the face but it was sure it was a male for his shoulders were broad and his steps convinced me the more.I trailed him but lost him.
{KORSAKOFF}: I am quite convinced it's her lover. That disgrace sees her often and I have been oblivious of this.
{ANNA}:How could you be so sure it was him.
{KORSAKOFF}: My instincts has never deceived me.She has ran away with her lover but not for long.
{JACOB}:Am I wrong to believe that your daughter is seeing someone else other than my son and now she ran away with him.Unbelievable!
{KORSAKOFF}: Unbelievably true. That's what it seems like.(Enter Rebecca).
{ANNA}:(Embracing her);Oh!My daughter, why did you decide to give us all a heartache?We thought you were in your room untill the maid came and disclosed you were missing and then moments later, one of the guards found you in the lobby.What has gone wrong with you?
{REBECCA}: I came to say goodbye.It will be callous of me to leave without a word.
{KORSAKOFF}:Of course, leaving with that impoverished fellow.
{ALEXANDER}: No my love, don't desert me. We have our differences.I have had sleepless night since the last time we met. My heart is at war because of you. I pray my plead and the presence of my parents will soften your heart and change your mind for it will gladen my sorrowful being.
{REBECCA}: I am gladen that you came.But my heart is with another, my whole being is endowed by his love.Am sorry to disappoint your anticipations but I have my mind made up and am leaving for Lyon with him tomorrow. I will be pleased to introduce him to you.
(Enter Ken, struck by the gaze of the bystanders like the wand of a sorcerer and stuck in acrimony.Their attitude suggest familiarity with the visitor and the two families are left speechless).
{ALEXANDER}: What is a butler doing in your home?
{KORSAKOFF, ANNA AND REBECCA}: A butler?
{JACOB}:Yes, he is an employee in my home and a butler. What business does he have among the elite?
{KORSAKOFF}: The sarcastic supposed boyfriend of my daughter. Perhaps, he could explain the meaning of this commotion.
{REBECCA}: Tell me it's not true Ken? It isn't right?
{KEN}: I don't understand what they are implying.
{ALEXANDER}: His name isn't Ken but Victor.
{KORSAKOFF}: (Laughing) The indigent worshiped fellow is about to crumble.
{REBECCA}: No, this can't be.Ken is the best man I have ever known. Not your equals.
{ALEXANDER}: (Chuckling) Oh! The best man you have ever known.I know he hasn't told you the little secret he has, playing around in the house with my mother.
{JACOB}: What does that suppose to mean?
{LYPI}:(Shocked) Don't say anything Alex.
{ALEXANDER}: Dad, mother has been flirting with him while you were away.
{ALL}:What?
{LYPI}:(Disdained) That is libellous. You have no substantial proof whatsoever. I know you never liked me. We never had a good relationship.You hate and despise me and prefer your father but that doesn't mean you have to satisfy yourself lying about my personality to public.I forbid you to speak no more
{ALEXANDER}: Of course mum, should I tell everyone of how he creeps out of your bedroom when Dad isn't there?
{JACOB}: Tell me that never happened in my home.
{LYPI}: I swear, I was never involved in such a degrading act. Am not a slut to be sleeping around with paupers or anyother subordinates.
{ALEXANDER}: No mum, I have always spied on you, most times you think I wasn't around and so you carry out your filthy activitiy.Victor has been your wonderful mate.
{LYPI}: Is that how much you hate me, I should not have aborted you when I had the chance.You and Your father brought misery into my life.Our consanguinity was a fatal mistake.
{JACOB}: And to think I was the one to be blamed for all our misfortunes. It's a big shame and am utterly disappointed in your despicable act.
{LYPI}: You caused it, you allocated your time to your business and forgot to satisfy the needs of your wife.
{JACOB}: And that's enough reason to go down with a servant, old to be your son.I wasn't the reason for your nagging.
{ANNA}: And I thought all this while, you were the most amiable and envious couple on this planet.  It's quite a disaster.You are nothing but mere hypocrites.
{KORSAKOFF}: (Stunned) Am really sorry for the way this has gone. Am sharing my utmost displeasure with the so called butler who walked into this premises by the mistake of my obstinate daughter, a gold digger and opportunist.Tell me, what have you got to say.The apparent lies that you haven't told, or the tears that has refused to let go out of your red eyes. Expound your deeds.
{KEN}: (Repentant) I admit to the fact am guilty, a liar and a gold digger. I loved your daughter so much, more than you can ever imagined for her money. I pretended loving her initially but I discovered she is a wonderful and  I regret for not letting her know who truly I am.I never met you by chance at first, it was all planned and I caused some trouble in your car before take off and I made sure I was in the right place to take care of it.
{REBECCA}: You blackmail and sleep with women for money, break their hearts and go away. I often say there are no good men left in this world but cold-hearted, selfish beings.
{KEN}: I guess nobody is perfect. Even the so called noble gentleman here isn't either. His deeds aren't a guarantee for him to be called so for his lies contrast his reputation.If I were you Rebecca, I would neither marry both of us for we are the birds of the same feather.
{JACOB}: Impossible! My son can't be in the same league as an opportunist.

{KEN}: You think he is the perfect gentleman. You don't know he has gotten a maid in your home three weeks pregnant.
{JACOB}: (To Alexander) You wouldn't do no such or will you?
{ALEXANDER}: Of course not, I will do no such thing, the name of the family comes first and will never daunt it.Its all cock and bull story.
{KEN}: (Clapping his hands) Sweet talk. The man held at high esteem by his father wouldn't want to let the cat out of the bag because he has skeletons in his cupboard. (He brings a white folded envelope from his breast pocket and hands it over to Jacob).
{JACOB}: What is this?
{KEN}: Pregnancy test. She told me specifically to hand it over to you.I was to that after I got back at the house to pack my things.She is at her parent's and that accounts for her two weeks leave.
(Jacob unfolds the envelope and opens the letter. Observing the content, he was struck in awe, testifying to the fact that it wasn't fabricated).
{JACOB}: What is this? Can you defend yourself of this mess?
{ALEXANDER}: Test results isn't a paternity test.It could be some low men that committed this, I can't be responsible.
{KEN}: (Handing over another letter to Jacob). The paternity test result.
{ALEXANDER}: How on earth did you get that?
{KEN}: You get what you want when you want to especially when desperate. That's simple.
{JACOB}: You have disappointed me.You are just as promiscuous as your mother.As contemptible as my vomit.How can you be mean to let go of a Lady with your baby? I trained you not that way.
{KORSAKOFF}:(Sad) A supposed family reunion in ruins like a shattered earthenware.Its my fault am in this melancholy. I can't stand the dismay, this shameful confessions. My daughter's heart has fallen victim. No amount of wealth can remedy the damage placed on my daughter for she now has a heart of burden and a load so big on her head that her neck might be shorten for the fear of its weight.I have come to the conclusion that the highly esteemed is nothing short of a common man.(He exits in despondent).
{KEN}: This is what the paupers and the affluent have in common.Can neither be overemphasized or otherwise.(To Rebecca) Am sorry, you deserve someone better, not me nor him.All I was after was your wealth and name and I would have brought agony to your life.
{REBECCA}: You are the worst human in the whole earth, more heartless and nefarious than the devil.I curse you all for today, I can't stand the sight of anyone for you are all despicable.I can no longer love any man for I see they dine with the devil.(She dashes to her room in sober, eventually collapsing on the way.She is helped by the occupants and eventually led out of the house).
