I never knew Kemi had a very creative mind until then. One would think she had worked for an Intelligence Agency before; we spent several minutes scheming and finally had a very good plan.

Kemi would go along with me to Samuels’s room the next day immediately after class, I would make an excuse for her presence and she would find a way to get his phone from him and delete the pictures.

”What if he doesn’t allow you to enter his room? What if he senses what we have planned? Are you sure this plan will work and not backfire on us?” I began to doubt the feasibility of the plan.

“You are too full of fear. Nothing will happen, let’s just plan it well and put the rest in God’s hand” she replied.

“Okay . How do you plan to delete the pictures on his phone? You know phones have passwords or security patterns that are needed to unlock them. And how are we sure he doesn’t have the pictures on his laptop or flash too?” I asked Kemi, trying to make sure we planned everything to the details.

“We may be lucky that he doesn’t have a password on his phone, and if he does, I will just pick the phone and we will give an excuse and leave immediately. And I doubt if he will be smart enough to have a backup on his laptop or flash.” She tried to assure me and allay my fears.

“Whatsoever the case may be tomorrow, let’s just pray that everything will work out for us” she added.

We held hands and prayed together that night

. We asked God to help us and allow our plan work out.

When we were done, I hugged Kemi so tightly and profusely thanked her for her support and friendship. At about 10pm, I left for my room and for the first time in days, I was able to sleep soundly.

I was in high spirits when I woke up the next day and left for class. We had a short class that day as our exams were drawing near and lectures were rounding off. Throughout the class, I kept praying in my heart that everything go smoothly and our plan will work out perfectly.

When the class ended, Kemi and I went for brunch and then went to the Library to read for few hours.

At about 4pm, we left the school’s popular Kenneth Dike Library and headed for Samuel’s hostel.

I knocked on the door, and it was his roommate, Segun that opened. We greeted each other and I asked about his mother’s health. He said she was feeling better and held the door for us to enter the room.

“Is Brother Samuel around?” I asked Segun as soon as we got in.

“Yes, he is. He is probably in the kitchen or went downstairs to get grocery.” He answered.

“I think you should call him. Is he aware of your visit?” Segun asked as he went back to reading his books.

“Yes he is.” I told him while I dialled Samuel’s phone number.

The phone rang right there in the room and when I looked up and followed the sound, I saw the phone on the table where he was charging it.

“That is Samuel’s phone ringing; he is probably not far away if he didn’t go out with his phone,” Segun suggested, “I suggest you should just wait for a short while”.

“Alright we will wait, thanks” I replied and drew nearer to Kemi.

“Should we check the phone now?” I asked her.

“I don’t think that is a good idea, he might come in at any time and if he sees us checking his phone, our plan will be ruined.” Kemi said and advised me to be patient and wait for the right time.

“Okay, I agree with you. Let’s wait till he comes in.” I relaxed and continue praying silently.

Samuel came in about three minutes later and he looked shocked when he saw Kemi in the room. I smiled when I saw the look on his face. He greeted us and smiled uneasily, pretending to be unaffected by Kemi’s presence. He apologized for keeping us waiting and asked if we would care for a drink.

As both of us shook our heads and declined, his phone began to ring.

He walked towards the table and picked it up. From the way he spoke, I suspected it was a call from home. When he was done with the call, he plugged his phone back and waited to confirm it was actually charging.

I followed his hands closely with my eyes and when I noticed he didn’t press the lock button to lock the phone; I smiled and silently prayed that the phone wasn’t set to lock automatically. Samuel walked up to me and whispered that he wanted to see me outside the room. I stepped out immediately and signalled to Kemi to start her investigations and recovery.

“What is the meaning of this rubbish?” Samuel started to speak angrily as soon as we stepped outside. “I asked you to come and visit me and you came with your best friend, you think you are smart, right?”

“Lower your voice, Samuel or do you want everyone to hear us? I didn’t plan to come with her but she insisted that she wanted to come and know your room. She kept insisting and insisting and when I said No, she began to suspect something was going on between the two of us; so I decided to allow her come.” I explained to him and bought more time.

“Do you expect me to believe this crap?” he asked and looked me over from head to toe.

“Well, I am not expecting you to believe, but I am saying the truth. In fact, I am beginning to suspect she have a crush on you.” I added and smiled.

My ploy proved effective as Samuel relaxed and smiled before asking, “Really, are you serious?” He must have thought that Kemi was another opportunity to satisfy his selfish sexual desire.

“Yes, I am serious, but don’t tell her I told you. She will never forgive me if she finds out I leaked her secrets. Haven’t you noticed that she is always in your class for bible study, or you think it is just a coincidence?” I continued delaying him with fantasies while buying more time for Kemi who was doing the Secret-Agent work inside the room.

He became increasingly interested in hearing about his secret crush, and he promised not to tell Kemi about it.

When he went back to the issue of seeing me alone, I gave the upcoming exam as an excuse and told him I would be too busy. He continued to insist that we see and talk until I had to agree to meet him two days later. He was happy I finally yielded.

”Make sure you come alone”, he said repeatedly and we returned into the room.

We had been outside for about fifteen minutes and as we entered, I could only hope my friend had done her part. Kemi was seated exactly the way she sat before we left and she looked innocently at the two of us as we came in.

“I am so sorry for leaving you alone inside,” Samuel apologized to her. “So how can I entertain you since this is your first time?”

“Our first time; you mean?” Kemi emphasized the ‘our’, pretending not to know anything about the rape.

“Oh no, this isn’t Jasmine’s first time, she has been here before”, Samuel explained.

“Really? I guess she is now keeping secrets from me”. Kemi said as she faced me.

“Anyways, don’t bother entertaining us; Jasmine and I still have some other fellowship members to visit”, she added and began to stand.

I knew it was a signal that everything was done and I stood up too.

We said our goodbyes to his roommate and left the room.

Kemi and I visited some other brothers living in the same hostel for just few minutes before we left the hostel.

“How did it go? Were you able to access his phone, did you delete the pictures?” I asked anxiously as soon as we were out.

“Calm down babe, everything is under control” she said confidently.

“Gist me, how did you do it?” I wasn’t ready to be calm.

“You guys went outside before the phone could lock automatically. I went straight to his Gallery to search for the pictures, I wanted to delete them at first, but they could serve as evidence so I sent them to my phone. I also checked his videos to see if there is a video of you or something, and guess what I saw?” she asked.

“What?!” I shouted, afraid.

“Did he make a video of my nudity?” I asked, expecting the worst.

“His video folder was full of pornography videos, my dear. More than fifty different ones; the one that I mistakenly played is still playing in my mind. I can’t believe that he is under the bondage of pornography, no wonder he couldn’t control himself.” Kemi shook her head in disbelief.

“You scared me there, Kemi. I thought you saw a video of me or something, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you did, because that brother is a devil. And I am not surprised that he is watching pornography too.” I hissed and calmed down a bit.

“Let me see the pictures you transferred” I collected the phone from Kemi.

There were more than twenty pictures that she transferred and mere looking at them gave me Goosebumps.

“Are you sure we should keep this pictures, what if it falls into the wrong hands?” I asked Kemi.

I was ashamed to have Kemi see my nakedness and even have it on her phone and I didn’t want anyone to ever have to see those pictures again.

“It won’t fall into wrong hands,” Kemi assured me. “Transfer everything from my phone to yours now and put them all in a folder that would be locked with a password”.

“Wow! That is a good idea; you are the best, Kemi. What will I do without you? Hope you checked other folders in his gallery too, hope he didn’t use this same method you just taught me.” I asked to fully calm my anxiety and fear.

“Trust me, I checked every folder, I even deleted your chats on WhatsApp, just in case he tried to recover the pictures he sent to you on WhatsApp through the chats.” She really had everything covered.

“Wow! You even thought about that? I need to give you a medal award for best friend ever” I said and gave her a hug. I was very impressed with the turnout of things and thanked God I opened up to my friend.

Till evening, I half-expected Samuel to call me but he didn’t. I knew he obviously hadn’t noticed that the pictures were gone.

I had a completely wonderful night rest that night after a long time; I felt as if a heavy load had been lifted from my head.

Samuel called me the next day and judging from how he spoke with confidence, I doubted if he had noticed yet. The next day was the day we had fixed to meet again and when he called to confirm our meeting, I told him I wouldn’t be able to come again. He was furious and threatened me as usual but this time, I just told him to do his worst.

He called back few minutes later. I knew it could only mean one thing: he couldn’t find the pictures on his phone again.

“Did you tamper with my phone, Jasmine?” he shouted over the phone as soon as I picked the call.

“Which phone? What do you mean? I don’t know what you are talking about.” I replied him calmly.

“I can’t find your pictures on my phone again. I know I saw it few days ago, but now it is all gone”

“Really? Are you serious?“ I asked him, still pretending to be surprised.

But I couldn’t keep up the pretence for so long as I couldn’t help but laugh and savour the moment I had been waiting for.

“So you think you are the only one that is smart, right?” I asked him, mockingly.

He fell silent for a while and I laughed into his ears and hissed again and again in between laughter.

“Now you are showing your colour too, right? Don’t worry, I will surprise you, and that Kemi you call your friend. It will hit you where you least expected”, he threatened.

“Do not threaten me again, young man. I am free from your bondage”, I shouted back at him, laughed and hung up on him.

“What if he has a backup of the pictures or something else to use against me?” I thought as I dropped my phone.

I silently prayed he doesn’t. Meanwhile, since Kemi had told me to always record our conversations, I did.

A week passed and I didn’t hear from Samuel, and it felt really good to be free. I never knew he could be so mute, after all his threats, and it taught me a lesson that the devil will only have you in bondage as long as you don’t open up to God, the only one that can save. I realized that in my case, Kemi was the one God used as a lifesaver, her wisdom and confidence challenged me.

We had just finished our exams, and they went really well as I was able to concentrate without the distraction and bondage of Samuel. I decided to relax for few days in school before going home.

I was watching a movie in my room on one of those days when Kemi walked into my room, looking bored.

“What’s up Jasmine, what are you up to? I am feeling so bored” she said as she jumped on my bed.

“Hey! Babe, don’t jump on my laptop o. Are you not the one that was eager to finish the exams ASAP, now that the exam has finished, boredom is your next complain” I said and playfully pushed her.

“Don’t mind me o, I didn’t know I will be this bored. But I am happy the exams have ended, my brain was almost exploding with too much cramming of formulas and equations”. Kemi said, and adjusted herself on the bed.

“Okay o, come and join me to watch film then” I told her and shifted aside to create more space for her.

“You know I don’t like movies now, I prefer to watch football sef.” She hissed as she settled beside me.

We had just finished watching two episodes of a TV series when Kemi remembered she had a gist for me.

“Jasmine, guess who I saw this afternoon when I went to buy soup ingredients at Idia market,” she asked, looking at me with a suspicious smile, “Samuel!” she answered before I could speak.

“Bro Samuel?” I asked to be sure.

“Yes o”

“Did he see you too? Or you dodged him?”

“Dodge ke, why will I dodge him? I went straight to him and before he could even say a word, I gave him a piece of my mind” Kemi responded with an air of confidence.

“Hmmm, I trust you, madam Iron lady. So tell me what you told him” I wanted to hear all about the conversation.

“I told him to never call or text you again in his God-forsaken life, and I told him that all the pictures he took are now with us and that if he tries any rubbish again, then we will report him to the police or better still go to the fellowship president.” she explained.

“Come and see how he was gentle like a sheep, he just kept quiet” Kemi added.

“Really? Wow! You are the bomb, Kemi. Seriously, if I was the one that saw him I would have dodged him, but now that you have scared the devil out of him, I think I have more confidence to face him if I meet him again, though I wish I never meet him again.” I said.

“Wait o, what was he doing in front of our hostel in the first place, I hope it is not what I am thinking?” I asked Kemi.

“It is exactly what you are thinking, my dear. I’m sure he came to visit a sister because I saw them together when I was heading back to the hostel”. She confirmed my suspicion.

“Is she someone I know?”,  I asked.

“Yes, she is from our fellowship too, Sister Chinyere in Evangelism Group”

“Sister Chinyere in our faculty?” I asked to confirm.

“Exactly” she replied.

“I just hope this devil is not planning to make this sister a victim too. I think the fellowship needs to sound a note of warnings to sisters.  Sisters should not visit any brother alone for any cause and brothers should not propose to any sister without informing the elders. I think this will help in a lot of ways, or what do you think?” I asked her.

“I totally agree with you, even though I don’t like rules, but if such rules had been in place, it is possible that you might not have been a victim” she answered.

“So what do you think we should do?” I felt concerned for the sister in question and hoped she wouldn’t pass through what I went through in the hands of Samuel.

“Do about what?” Kemi asked.

“About Sister Chinyere of course, don’t you think we need to warn her or something?”

“How is that your business, and what exactly will you be warning her about? Will you tell her that Samuel is a rapist or what? Because if you do she will ask you how you knew that, unless you want to share your experience with her” she said.

“Never, I can’t share my experience with anyone especially her. She talks too much, I doubt if a secret can last a day with her. I just think we should be our sister’s keeper, that’s all”.

“I will advise you to just keep calm and don’t say anything that will put you in trouble. The best thing we can do is to pray for her and any other person that Samuel might have his eyes on, plus we are not even sure he is proposing to her yet, all these are just assumptions, you know?” she explained.

“Okay, if you say so. Let’s just pray that no one will fall a victim again and let us pray for Samuel too, he needs Jesus.”

“Did I just hear you say we should pray for Samuel? Not only pray, we will praise him too” Kemi hissed at the idea. “I will rather curse him”, she added and waved off the topic.

I allowed the matter rest and we continued watching our movie into the night.
