Neema delicately placed her foot down on the carpeted floor. The swelling on her ankle had gone down but it was still a bit tender. The pain had receded but she couldn’t walk yet. Groaning at her misfortune, she huffed and placed her head on the bedrest. Lulu and Ngao had already left and she was bored. She couldn’t remember a day when she didn’t have work to do . The day was not yet over and she was going out of her mind with boredom. She was trapped in the master bedroom and wanted out. She ignored the great wall T.V and wanted to venture out and explore the house more.

She decided that when Jabali came home she would confront him about Ngao and find out what he was up to. Neema didn’t believe Jabali was doing this from the goodness of his heart. He wanted something back, maybe to blackmail her more. That’s right, she nodded her head. He was after blackmailing her.

Carefully wrapping a heavy bandage around her foot; Jabali had left the first aid Kit on her bedside table, she took another step down on the floor. This time the pain was minimal and she could stand straight. Breathing a sigh of relief, she waddled to the bathroom and tried to make herself presentable. If she was going to face Jabali, she needed to prepare.

…………………………………….

‘The preparations for the sports day are coming on well,’ the event’s organizer who the company had hired briefed Jabali who kept glancing at his watch

. Willing time to move.

‘We have identified the field and the referees for various ball games have been chose. The teams will be divided from each department and we hope that almost everyone will be able to participate. The community has been informed and they are anxiously waiting, the…’ the man continued to drawl in his monotone voice.

‘I believe the event will go on without much of hustle?” Jabali cut him short,

‘Yes Mr. Kasri, we are undertaking measures to ensure that everything goes on smoothly, the local police will send some rent-a-cop to help with the security’ the man wiped his brow at Jabali hard stare,

‘Good. Make sure the opening ceremony is at eight o’clock and the closing ceremony to be the following night. I want the ceremonies to go smoothly. Do you understand?”

‘Noted Mr. Kasri.’ The man nodded his head promptly.

Jabali rarely took part in the organizing of the company’s events but this time it was different. He wanted to announce his marriage to the company and the community. It was the opportune time to do that. All the board members will be around. Some of the community leaders will also be in attendance. They would be in a celebratory mood and it would be easier to break the news. The day of the closing ceremony was also strategically chosen. That meant that it would be a week before the voting to be done. Jabali felt satisfied with himself. If everything went as planned, he would win the board and have Neema as his wife. Killing two birds with one stone.

A few people knew of his marriage to Neema and he intended to keep it that way. He had heard whispers in the corridors of the company about it but he no one had been brave enough to ask him out right.

‘Well thank you,’ Jabali stood up stretching his hand to shake the sweaty palm of the event organizer.

‘See you soon Mr. Kasri,’ the man left the office just in time as a furious Vivian came in fuming like a hell cat.

‘Jabali, how could you do this to me?’ she threw her handbag down on the floor and came directly in front of his table, standing over him anger in her eyes.

‘Vivian, what are you doing here?’ he didn’t want to waste time on her. They were friends but that could seriously change if she continued embarrassing himself this way. He needed a new receptionist but he was reluctant to employ someone else. Neema was not easily replaceable. The Human Resource department provided him with several CVs but he didn’t pick any of the qualified candidates.

‘You married another girl?’ Vivian ignored his question and shouted at him,

‘My personal life is none of your business,’ Jabali ignored her and sat back down. He was not going to deal with her now. She had always been a drama queen but this was another level. He knew she was clingy and had entertained her in the past but not once did he give her an impression that he was interested in anything more. She must have misread him in some way.

‘It is my business; we were doing fine. Why did you go ahead and marry that peasant girl? She is a nobody, she doesn’t deserve you,’ Vivian shouted at his indifferent face and Jabali had the urge to throw her out of his office for insulting Neema but he held back.

‘Sit down Vivian and keep your voice low,’ he commanded her and she crossed her arms across her chest, frowning at him but at least she sat down pouting her deep red lips. Jabali frowned at her, right now she didn’t look attractive at all. What did he see in her? He shook his head in regret. He had to take some fault for misleading her. If he didn’t entertain her once in a while, she wouldn’t be here causing drama. He should have stopped the moment it became obvious she was clingy.

‘Why Jabali? Tell me these are only rumors, you couldn’t have gone behind my back and married another girl,’ she continued screeching the voice grating Jabali’s nerves. He shouldn’t be here with Vivian, he had to check on Neema at home. He had left her at the hand of the servants but he knew her. She wouldn’t seat still. her stubbornness had made her refuse his offer of going to the hospital to have her leg checked.

‘Are you even listening to me?’ Vivian’s wails had brought him back from his thoughts, now she had tears were shining on her eyes. Jabali hated that, he didn’t like to see a girl cry. He rose from his chair and rounded the table to where she was sitting and laid his arm on her shoulder.

‘Vivian, to answer your question, yes am married though it is still a bit private,’ he told her,

‘Why couldn’t you marry me?’ she griped his hand the tears falling off her eyes, ‘we would be unstoppable, I could give you my wealth if you asked,’ she gripped his arms in plea, ‘it is not too late, we can change all this. I can give you anything you want Jabali, you know that,’

‘Vivian there is no need…’ he started prying her hands from his,

‘You can’t do this to me Jabali,’ her voice turned cold as she wiped her tears. ‘I know you married her to save your post in the company,’

‘I think its time you leave Vivian,’ he walked back to his sit and called his driver to come and take her home. He had heard enough of her.

‘If you didn’t want me Jabali, why did you go out with me?’ she asked the same cold voice, tears wiped off. That was the Vivian Jabali rarely saw, her eyes cool and steady against his. He was used to her being flighty.

‘Our relationship was mutual and I didn’t promise you anything,’ Jabali didn’t understand why she would bring that up. What happened to them was in the past.

The door was knocked from out, ‘come in,’ Jabali called welcoming any intervention. Abdul his driver came in and Vivian stood up, her face composed.

‘This is not over Mr. Kasri.’ She then turned and walked out, her heels clacking on the marble floor and flicking her hair. Jabali motioned Abdul follow her close behind, the driver nodded and followed Vivian. Only after the door closed behind them did he let out a sigh of relief.

It took a second for it to register that for the first time since he met Vivian, she had called him Mr. Kasri. The thought disturbed Jabali for some reason.

……………………………………………

Majid tried to stop the ringing of his head after the blow he had just received. He spit out blood and closed his swollen eye.

‘You had one job Majid. One job. Why do you keep failing to do it every time?’ the heavy voice asked staying in the shadows of the dark alley. A heavy rain coat and a straw hat on top of his head. On one of his hand was a heavy machete that he swung from side to side menacingly. Majid looked at the weapon nervously. One wrong move and he was dead.

‘Why do I have to keep picking on your slack?’

‘give me another chance and I will do it this time. I promise,’ Majid pleaded knowing very well his life was in danger.

The dark figure laughed ominously, ‘another chance? For you to screw up my plans again? I have given you enough chance and you misused all of them. I should kill you and get done with it,’

‘No wait, please spare me. I have always been loyal to you…I still am,’

‘No you listen to me; your job was to scare Mzee Kadiri’s daughter out of town. Neema was to leave and never come back but alas, she is now married to Jabali Kasri. It will be now even harder to get to her.’ The figure kneeled down to be on the same level of Majid, who was trembling with fear, ‘you failed at it years ago and you have failed it again. Ngao was to leave this town too but he is back again. Why can’t you run them out? You failed to kill Naiti and I did it for you. Tell me again why should I let you live?’

‘Please…’ Majid was now crying, he cursed Neema for bringing all this trouble for him. If he ever survived this, she was going to pay.

‘I will pardon you Majid, one more time. I want Neema dead before she becomes too nosey. I don’t care how you do it but just know I will finish you if you fail at this job,’

‘Thank you. I promise not to let you down,’ Majid raised his eyes in appreciation, ‘but forgive me if I may ask…’

The figure didn’t say anything and Majid took that as chance to speak, ‘Neema is already married, shouldn’t we focus on Ngao now?’

‘You are so stupid.’ The dark figure cursed,’ can’t you see that our house of cards will come crumbling down if she and Jabali manage to make this sham of marriage work?’

‘I…don’t understand,’

‘As always you are slower that a pregnant elephant.’ He scoffed, ‘Now listen carefully. We have managed to get away with the death of Naiti for so long because Neema doesn’t believe that Jabali is innocent of her brother’s murder. Once she gets through the animosity she had against her husband, it won’t be long for her to figure out that Jabali didn’t kill Naiti and she will be unto us. That is why she has to die.’

‘Oh,’ Majid shuddered at the dark evilness of the figure.

‘You have work to do and I expect you to do it.

. Don’t let me down again,’ the man then traced his footsteps back disappearing into the dark alley. Just the way he had appeared.

Majid quickly stood up, fixing the zipper of his trousers. The man had caught up to him before he was able to zip his pants. Catching him literally pants down and raining blows on him. He wiped his mouth again with the sleeve of his hand cursing Neema again and again.

Why did she have to make his life hard? How was he to kill her with that gorilla of her husband surrounding her like an alpha male?

In frustration he kicked an empty can and ended up slipping on the wet dirty ground. The breath knocked out of him. In this position he swore to go after Neema. Somehow, he would penetrate the high-end walls of the Kasri mansion and get to her. Somehow.
