‘Neema, you should not work in that office anymore,’ Lulu huffed and stumped her foot on the ground angrily, ‘Jabali might be my esteemed customer and your boss but he shouldn’t treat you like that,’ Neema wondered how Lulu would react if she told him, Jabali nearly kissed her, twice. And she had the yearn to kiss him back, just to remind herself the soft taste of his lips.

She shook her head to wipe off the thought . That would never happen.

‘I signed a contract, if I stop there I will have to pay for breaching it and yet I don’t have the money to do that,’ Neema lay her head on the cool table as she watched the laundry machines swirl round and round with clothes in them. The motion was hypnotizing.

She had left home early Saturday morning to visit Lulu at her laundry matt. Neema wanted to go straight to where Lulu was staying but her friend requested her to come at the shop.

She wanted someone to talk to and Lulu was always good at hearing. She poured out her mystery as Lulu served her endless cups of hot tea. Neema was sure her bladder was going to burst if she continued to take more of the addicting stuff.

‘Ngao needs a good beating on his behind for talking to you like that, you are his elder and he should know better. You uprooted your life from Nairobi for him for crying out loud,’ Lulu continued breathing fire and brimstone and Neema felt a bit better.

‘Ngao is right Lulu,’ Neema couldn’t help but agree with her brother’s words, ‘I was selfish to leave town and my family behind

. They needed me at that time,’

‘No that is not true,’ Lulu countered, ‘Ngao needed school fees and you had to work to provide it,’

‘Then why do I feel like I abandoned them?’

‘Oh, Neema,’ Lulu took her friends hand in hers, ‘you did nothing wrong. Ngao will see this at last,’

‘Mr. Mukabi the police officer knows of a school in the next town that would take Ngao in,’ Neema announced, ‘he called in yesterday night to say that, though am not keen on letting him out of my sight.’

‘You have to let him go Neema, he is a grown man now,’ Lulu squeezed her hands,

‘You are right. I will think on it,’

For the next hour Neema and Lulu talked about a lot of things, what puzzled Neema was that Lulu was reluctant to talk about her life when she left Tembo town. She shrugged her shoulders and gave monogamous answers every time Neema asked a question. Neema didn’t bother much because she believed that Lulu would open up when she was ready.

As it neared noon, Neema decided to go home and help prepare lunch. She bid Lulu goodbye and took off home.

As she took a short cut through an infamous alley, she had someone calling out her name.

‘Neema, you never learn, do you?’ Majid’s haunting voice came through the dark backstreet, Neema closed her eyes praying that she was dreaming and Majid was not anywhere near her. ‘the dark streets are not a place for a girl like you,’

‘Open your eyes beautiful, I am standing right here,’ Majid’s voice was so close to her and she opened her eyes to gaze at his evil glinting gaze, Neema took a step back, he was dressed in some flowery open shirt and jean trousers. The years had not been kind to him, his bony figure was gaunt and his hair line had receded. He looked twice his age.

‘What do you want from me Majid?’ Neema managed to control her trembling limbs, Majid was a scum and she hated him with passion. She wiped her around to look if anyone was around but the alley was silent. It seemed like he had followed her and cornered her.

‘Oh you still remember me? Do you also remember that we had unfinished business?’ he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him.

Neema remembered her clearly their last encounter, he had tried to force himself on her and she had fought him. If it had not been for Jabali, he might have his way. Right now, Jabali was nowhere. She had to fend him off on her own.

Neema struggled against him, his tightening hand was strong on her.

‘Let me go, you big cow,’ she screamed hoping someone will hear.

‘I will not let you go Neema, you have been avoiding my calls lately,’ he said pulling her hard she stumbled. At the end of the alley, Neema could see a car parked and another man standing at the passenger’s door smiling at them. Was she being kidnapped? Had he been the one who was continuously calling her and not talking? She had finally blocked the mysterious number ant the insistent calls stopped. Had it been Majid the whole time?

‘What are you talking about?’ she screamed again, ‘Help, somebody help. Please,’

‘Nobody will come to your help, you stupid girl. You should have stayed in the city where you were and not step a foot back to this town. This time round your boyfriend is not here to protect you,’ Majid screeched at her ears and Neema whimpered, this couldn’t be happening.

‘Now move before I hit you, you and your family are causing me a lot of problems,’

Neema bit her lip and remembered a move Naiti had taught her. She couldn’t let Majid lead her to the car, it would be over before it even began. She had to get away sooner.

‘I have waited for this chance for a long time Neema. In the past you somehow managed to evade me but not now I have you where I want,’ Majid then licked her cheek with his long slimy tongue and Neema had the urge to gag.

She raised her feet and stumped down on his large toe, he was wearing open toe shoes, hard.

. Majid squealed like a pig and backhanded her. Neema lost her equilibrium for a moment, her head filled with stars.

The cruel hand Majid had on her was the only thing keeping her from collapsing on the muddy ground.

‘You think you are so smart,’ Majid pulled her forward again and Neema could taste the coppery taste of blood on her lips. She ignored the pain and focused on getting out of the situation she was in.

Poking her two fingers out, she quickly turned around and aimed for Majid’s small beady eyes. With precision she aimed and managed stabbed him squarely. The surprised look on his face turned to pure agony as she stumped on his feet again harder this time. Majid let out an awful cry and went on his knees, releasing her instantly.

Neema didn’t wait a second later, she took off like a rabbit. Running for her life.

The screams for her to stop didn’t slow her down. She was out of the alleyway and into the main street, straight into a brick wall.

She prepared to fall down but a strong arm held her straight. Neema screamed, scratched and fought thinking it was Majid. He had caught up with her.

‘Neema calm down,’ Neema opened her eyes to see Akila looking down at her. ‘What is it? You are bleeding, what happened?’

‘Please help me,’ she clutched to the lapels of his expensive coat and held on.

Fearful for her life.

Again.
