Ola's Wedding

Ola and I have been long time friends in school. We were so close in school hostel then that people took us to be twin. We shared same clothes, same hair do and walked same ways. The only difference between us was our names. I knew Ola's ways and she knew mine. We never expose each other weaknesses. We were cool together. We were sisters . Ola, an orphan knew how to package herself and people never believed she's an orphan. She's social, polite and didn't allow the substance of life to make her bitter or lose herself. She is a lady of substance even though she has some weaknesses that might utter her destiny and future.

Back then Ola had a sugar daddy, a Chubby looking man above fifty, a medical doctor who took care of all her needs. Ola never lacked anything for all she did was just to ask. One day, she met me in the hostel just immediately I came back from lectures and was sitting on my bunk. With all excitement, she hugged me,

"Guess what baby girl"

 she said to me

I never knew what made her so excited.

"You know I am not good at guessing"

I replied her with a yawny face.

"Just try na " she insisted. I had to say something even if I don't get it right, to please her.

"Ok! Is it about your new boyfriend?"

"You are almost there " she said to me feeling so proud." Alright enough of the guessing, it is about the new man I met, girl he is rich and I know he will definitely help me, if not all, some". Ola said to me. I was so happy for her but some things were just running through my mind and I let it out.

"Is he married or single? You know this days, you never can tell. Is he a married man?" I asked her.

"He is above fifty and married. It's just for fun and nothing more. I will glew to him as long as he supports and satisfies me. The married, the better" she replied me.

I felt so awful though but tried to force a smile on my face, so she wouldn't feel bad.

"I am happy for you, Ola but at the same time sad that the man is your father's age. Just be careful" I advised her. Well, it wasn't my business anyways, I only cared to enjoy the benefits.

One fateful day, Ola introduced me to her new daddy. I was expecting to see some strange face only to shake hands with my Lecturer, Dr. Uweke. I was really tense though because he wasn't close to me. He didn't even know my name. It wasn't his fault though, I wasn't really outstanding in class. For the first time I met him outside the classroom. He is so simple and jovial unlike the tough Dr. Uweke I see in class and examination hall. In class, he's tough, doesn't smile with students. Student hated him for that. He was so soft to Ola, calls her baby and I wondered if Ola used some spell on him.

Ola completed her school through the help of her sugar daddy.

I remember the day she was so broke and needed money to pay her school fees. She came to my house looking so worried and devastated. She said to me,

"Anny, I am so worried on how to get money to pay my school fees, exams is in two weeks time".

Tears dropped down her eyes as she said this, I wished I could help her but I couldn't. I comforted her and wiped the tears off.

"Why don't you meet Dr. Uweke, talk to him, he might help you out since you are his girl". I told her. This was Ola's final exams and she didn't want to miss it.

The next day, Ola went to Dr. Uweke's office and was told to wait for him since he wasn't around then. Ola sat and waited for him. Around 5.00pm, he returned.

 "Good evening, Sir"

I greeted him

"Good evening girl. I heard you waited so long for me. I'm so sorry, I had been in a conference" he said to me. " So what brought you to my office today "he asked her

"Sir, I have a little challenge. I am unable to pay my school fees and my exams is approaching. I don't want to miss it, can you help me with some money?" Ola knelt down to plead. Dr. Uweke was her only hope. If disappointed, she might not write her finals. He accepted but was on a condition that she will come and see him at Neofis Hotel by 10. 00 pm so she could get the money. Ola had no other option than to accept it. She did the needful, got the money and paid her fees. She wrote her exams and passed with flying colours. She graduated and got a job. Dr. Uweke assisted her in getting the job through his childhood friend who is a manager of a big company in Gambia.

After three years when Ola left her sugar daddy, she met a Lawyer named James. He works in a Law firm. They met at a friend's wedding, became friends and started dating. Within a year, James proposed to Ola. Everything was going smooth and easy until James introduced Ola to his father. Ola felt so uncomfortable and demands for a break up...He was Dr. Uweke, James's father.

That day, James's father called James and had a talk with him. He said to him,

"Son, I know you are of age to choose what you want but I seriously don't like you taking Ola for a wife. I won't accept it".

"But why daddy? What crime as she committed? I have known Ola for been a good girl. Why don't you accept me marrying her ". The son exploded in anger. He had loved Ola and couldn't do without her.

The father still insisted, "Son, I can't be alive and I allow you bring a slut into this family. I won't permit that... Not in my generation". He said it rigorously to his son point a finger to his face.

"You can say all you want daddy but I won't leaves Ola. I will marry her... it's my life and not yours" saying this, he left his presence. This provoked him more.

"Try it and I disown you" the father shouted at him.

The next day, Ola met James. She told James everything that went on between her and his father. She asked for a breakup and his forgiveness. James forgives her and promise to marry her no matter the relative she had with his father.

"I promise you Ola, no matter the relationship you had between you and my father, I still love you and I will marry you" he hugged Ola tightly and couldn't let go of her.

"I don't deserve to be your wife James. I deserve a break up. I don't want you again. I keep feeling guilty. I want to start a new life...free from guilt and bad memories ". Ola cried out. He wiped her tears away.

James was disowned by the father. After few years, he got married to Ola in a church wedding. They declared their marriage vows together and promise never to leave each other in good times and in bad times. Ola didn't believe it could come true for her, not after what she did with James father.

Truly, she believed that love entails forgiveness. Immediately after the wedding ceremony, they left the city for abroad. There, they began a new life, had two lovely girls; Janet and Juliet. Every morning, their wedding image reminds them of the love they have for each other,

"Love is sweet but ours is the sweetest"

maybe it was love, maybe it was a strong feeling of forever. James an Ola were happily married thereafter.
