Breathing life into fantasizes

"ain't you supposed to wake up by now? "

Mum said pulling the wrapper away from our body. We all stood up to start our morning chores. Aisha is the third born and she was just 6.so no chores for her. Mine was to wash the plates while sister Tawakalt sweeps then mummy do the cooking (we all have the way we share chores in our home right? )

"I hate washing plates "I said staring at Aisha "you better grow fast and start washing these plates. You probably think you are still young "she doesn't even act like she heard . She turned on the TV. Then I heard my favorite music; "you are my African Queen "by 2face. I dropped the plate and rush to see the video displayed on the screen.

"why are these ladies so beautiful" I said covering my mouth. A sudden sound on my back and that was mom

" are you done washing the plates? Thank God you know you won't eat without finishing your chores."

"I am still talking to you Eni, go wash those plates, eat and prepare to plait your hair at iya milaja's place"she said walking inside the room.

I just resonate with all she's saying then I turned to her

"mummy,  what did you say? I am tired of this hair.  I don't want to plait it anymore. I want to shave it all Just like that lady in Africa Queen " pointing to the lady in the video .

"you can't cut your hair, you are a girl" she screamed

"let her cut it,  atleast we won't have to plait for her hair plait every week" dad murmured happily. Coming inside and putting his newspaper on the table.

"okay, fine.  If you cut your hair you won't plait it ever again "mom said with an assurance look on her eyes. Waiting for my response.

"Agreed mom" I replied jumping up while walking my way to the kitchen .

Here I am in my bed thinking of how beautiful I would look after the hair cut.  Imagining the lady in the video and comparing myself to her. What I'm most happy about is that I'm going to start secondary school with this stunning look.

The Adegbolas are like family friend. Their building is just a walk down from ours. The older born is just of my elder sister's age, Muhammad. The second born is of my age, Abdullah while the last born is older than Aisha, saidat.

Mrs Adegbola just came back from the market so she branched at our place, resting on the chair while explaining how things are expensive. Abdullah was standing holding a sack. My dad and I walked in

"Assalam alykum ma,  how's everything? I just asked of you from your husband "

"Walykumu salam oo, we thank God. What happened to your hair Eni " she turned to me with her jaw dropped while mom and the rest were laughing.

"this is the Africa queen of our time" mom replied facing her and laughing

"isn't she beautiful,  she insisted on cutting her hair;  African queen. See your ogo and the way your head is shining.

They keep laughing. I wanted the floor to swallow me(who says courage can't solve things)  I walked in majestically, trying to keep a smile. Leaving them in the sitting room to check how I truly look like in the mirror.

I burst out crying

"mummy, this is not what I want "I cried, couldn't help the flow of water coming from my eyes

"well that's what you get,  how do you expect to look like her. Lol., come and check the bag I sent Mrs Adegbola to buy for you "

"this should last you for jss1- 3" she said looking at the bag..

Just don't argue with African parents .That is how I barbered my hair throughout secondary school cos mum won't agree to me plaiting it......... No copy copy next time
