Happy Never After - Episode 16

 

“I still don’t understand,” she said as they finally got home.

“What don’t you understand, babe?” he asked, sitting down. “He tried to kill me, just as I had thought. He prescribed the wrong dosage for me, I was sharp enough to have intercepted it. Thank God I had my room changed and the other guy was brought into my room, he didn’t know this. He just went ahead and did what he wanted to do, but to the wrong person.”

Alicia couldn’t understand a thing as nothing made sense . When she tried to ask at the hospital, she was told that the case was under a great monitoring and couldn’t be discussed further. She tried to find Fabian, but he wasn’t given access to see her. Everything was just so wrong, until they went to the court and a nurse confessed to the crime. She knew about the whole plan. She also said, it wasn’t the first time that Fabian would make an attempt on Daniel’s life.  When Daniel was asked, why, he said Fabian had always wanted something that belonged to him, and that it was all jealousy.

Alicia had been disappointed, so disappointed was she that she left the court that day. She felt bad

. Fabian had said something like this to her in the hospital, that Daniel was better off dead, so they could be together. She never knew he would go ahead with the insane plan. She turned a deaf ear to him as he called her name in the court. This could have also landed her in jail, if not that Daniel tried to cover her up. He never revealed her name in the court. He spared her that and for that she was grateful  to him, it was easier to get married to someone who almost died because of her, it was a way to show her gratitude. Besides, he was everything he had always wanted, Fabian had just blinded and confused her.

PRESENT

“I’m sorry for shouting at you.”

Alicia looked up at Daniel as he entered, holding a bouquet of flowers in his hands and looking sober.

He had gone out all day, only to return in the evening with the flowers. She had been the only one in the house.

“Where were you?” she asked, unsmiling. She was sitting on the couch in the living room.

“I just had to go cool off.”

“For almost ten hours?” she asked, raising her brows.

“Yes, I needed to. I have anger issues and, I do not want it to get out of hands,” he explained coming closer to her.

“Anger issues? Since when did you have anger issues?” she asked, frowning.

“Didn’t  we discuss that. I am sure that  I told you,” he replied, walking closer to her.

“No, you didn’t. I am pretty sure that I would have remembered,” she replied but then recalled the time he had told her that he had something to tell her. That was before they stopped talking on line, before meeting for real.

“Oh, was that what you wanted to tell me that time?” she asked.

“Well, if I didn’t tell you then I am certain that I planned to tell you,” he said, bending down to kiss her. “So do you forgive me?” he asked.

She inhaled. “Yes, I am sorry too. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. But, we need to talk.”

He nodded and sat next to her. “Yes, I thought so too.”

She waited for a while before starting. “You knew about Fabian and I?”

“It was pretty obvious,” he replied.

“So, why didn’t you say anything?”

He shrugged. “I knew you were confused and I was waiting for you to make up your mind,” he replied.

She stood up, walking towards the window with arms akimbo. “You knew I was cheating on you and you said nothing?”

“What did you want me to say? I didn’t want to lose you and maybe if I had reacted then, perhaps we wouldn’t be here. You would still be married to a murderer.”

She frowned and turned around. “I know, it’s just, something is wrong. I feel like it is.”

“With us?” he asked.

She didn’t know what it was. “I was cheating on you, Daniel, and you kept quiet. You never said anything, until this morning. You have been carrying that with you all this time?”

“Let it go, babe. I forgive you, okay?”

She inhaled. This didn’t make any sense. Yet, she said nothing.

Finally, he walked up to her and tried to kiss her. She kissed him back reluctantly while managing  a smile.

“I need to check the basement, will be right back,” he said, dropping his phone on the table.

She watched as he left and seconds later, she could hear him no more.

She picked up her phone and dialed Luca’s number, it rang for a while but she was distracted when Daniel’s phone began to ring. She ended her call and picked up his. She has never seen him call anyone or anyone call him and now that someone would, the caller was  House rent manager. Good, she thought. Perhaps, she could ask about the walkie-talkie and if any message has come through it.

She silenced it, stood up to see if he was by any chance coming back before picking.

“Hello,” she started.

The caller hesitated for a while. “Oh, hello Miss Hannah, I never knew you are back.”

She frowned. “No, this is not Hannah. I am Alicia.”

The lady  was quiet and then continued. “Well, sorry, I thought it was Mrs. Johnson, please is Mr.

. Johnson around?” she asked.

“I am Mrs. Johnson,” she replied.

“I am sorry, there has been some confusion….” said the lady.

“I thought Hannah moved out of the house?”Alicia asked.

“I’m sorry, I have to go…”

“Please, wait!”

The call ended just in time for Alicia to hear Daniel whistling towards the room. Quickly, she deleted the call that just entered and below it, she saw a familiar number which was dialed the day before. She locked the phone and put it to where he had left it.

“Hey, babe?” he said as he entered.

“Hi,” she replied, trying as much as possible to act normal.

“Did anyone call me?” he asked, looking at her suspiciously.

“Nope,” she replied. “It was my phone,” she replied and her phone rang immediately. It was Lucas’ number.  She recognized it immediately,  it was the same number that  she had seen on Daniel’s phone. He had called her after lying to her that he didn’t know who he was…

Her heart kept beating very fast as she picked up her phone while watching Daniel picked up his. He was still going through his phone when he stopped and looked at her. ….

“Are you not going to pick up your call?” he asked.
