Tears Of Summayah - Episode 58

 

Summayah has been quite after the incident, always found lost in her own thoughts. She wasn't crying anymore, they have become enemy but she was betrayed most times and she had to let it out. 

Tired of crying, staying in solitude was the next option for her. It has been two months, all she did was hear people talk but wouldn't react or respond. Most of the nurses that came to check up on her talked about her even if it was more than two months, she didn't try to tell them to stop, there was no point explaining to people if they can't actually think. 

Most of them showed her their pity face, to her it was a facade and she hated to see that part of them . Why are some people two faced? They tell you it is going to be alright and the next second they are out there laughing at you behind closed doors. She wants to close her eyes and not open it forever, at least there won't be any issues. Most times, she had to be given pills to be able to sleep, that was not the life she pictured for herself. It was torture. 

The door creaked open, the busty nurse entered and from where Summayah sat, she could see her but the nurse couldn't even see her just because Summayah choose to be in the room without light. She loved it that way and that was one of the reasons the nurses hate to come to check up on her

. The nurse hissed before she tried looking for where the switch was. 

Nurse:I don't know why i am even here, i know you can hear me psychopath, you just like to cause people wahala. If i fall down ehn, you will see. I don't know if you will be the first girl to get pregnant, it is as if na only your head all the problem for naija dey. I don't know how to even handle you. (She managed to get to the switch and switched it on, she saw Summayah covering her face just because of the intensity of it in her eyes. The nurse yanked her hand from her face, fuming in anger.) Why can't you talk, huh? Do you want me to fall? How did you even get to switch it off everytime? You are disabled and still mischievous.

(Summayah looked away while she checked her body temperature. The nurse was done as quickly as possible and she moved out of the ward. Dr Maryam saw the nurse expression and how she was so pissed from a distance, she hasn't checked up on Summayah since yesterday. She walked in to her ward, she knew Summayah would always be at that "Spot". She was lost, looking out of the window, she held her hand and Summayah looked up at her.) 

Dr Maryam:Salam Alaikum Summayah, how are you? (She waited for sometime, Summayah didn't reply.) Summayah, just say something. It has been two months, don't make yourself suffer like this. You have to reply to my Salam today. Just say something please. 

Summayah:Walaykum Salaam. 

Dr Maryam:(She was so elated that she replied to her salaam after two months. She hugged her) Thank you so much for replying. I'm glad. (She looked at her body and how she had changed so much, Summayah was drowning in her own pain, even though she had a small stature, she has reduced drastically in the last two months, her protruding stomach was the only thing that made Summayah look visible.)

You will be fine, i will make sure you get the best treatment. I will take you away from this nagging people. Just talk to me, Summayah. What is going on in your head, what are you thinking about. (She burst out in tears) I hate to see you like this everytime, it hurts me and i want your old self back, that jovial Summayah that was always smiling and tried to make people happy. I might be selfish but you have to come back to me, to us. (She pleaded with her two hands above her head and she couldn't control her tears. Summayah was depressed and she couldn't stand to see her like that.) 

Summayah:I...am sorry for making you cry. I'm fine. (She wiped her tears) 

Dr Maryam:You are not, don't lie to me. I can see it in your face, you don't sleep as you are supposed to. Look at the bags under your eyes, just look at yourself. You have changed! Can you hear me? (She looked at the bed side, it was not a new thing for her to see her untouched food.She opened it and it was just as it was since yesterday.) You are not eating properly and you say that you are fine? 

Summayah:I...I'm not hungry. 

Dr Maryam:I will get you something to eat. 

Summayah:You don't have to. 

Dr Maryam:Get yourself today, you have to eat today even if i have to force you to. I can't continue to watch you like this, you lack the proper nutrients that your body deserves. Can you remember how many times you have been in critical state in this two months? It has been countless, just think about your child. Think! You are not the only one sitting down there. You are carrying a child for crying out loud. 

(Summayah stared at her, all she could see was sincerity and hope for her. She saw the pure love she had for her. Dr Maryam pulled her to herself, assuring her that she will be fine. She knew Dr Uthman has not been coming to see her, this made her more upset.)

Men are scum, he forced himself on her. She is like this all because of him and he didn't even care what happens afterwards. He is getting to hear from her, very soon! 

(She placed Summayah on the bed. Making sure she is comfortable, she walked out of the door and went into Dr Uthman's office without knocking. She was lucky that his patient just left his office, she locked the door.He was confused about what went wrong with Maryam, her facial expression wasn't home to write about.)

Uthman:Dr. Maryam, any problem? 

Maryam:Problem is an understatement here and i am not here to joke. I am not here as a doctor but as a sister to Summayah. 

Uthman:Wh...What is wrong with Summayah. 

Maryam:A lot of things is wrong Dr Uthman, A. Lot. Why did you abandon her? Why? Just tell me why you r*ped her and ruined her perfect life. 

Uthman:(He was so amazed at her outburst) Can you keep your voice down? 

Maryam:Why should i? Have you seen how Summayah is struggling to live? You careless right? Men are just the same, you think girls are s*x materials that can be used and discarded. I didn't even expect this from you, not in my wildest dream. Summayah is just a nice girl, you are the cause of her troubles. Are you not ashamed in anyway? How are you able to eat and sleep well when Summayah is depressed. 

When she cries her self to sleep, do you ever know if she was in pain. Do you know how your baby is doing well? You don't know anything, i am sure you will be the first person to claim the child if he/she is born into this world. Why can't you take care of her at this time? Men get away with things so easily and it is the women that suffer for everything. Why? 

Uthman:She is always sleeping whenever i decide to talk to her. 

Maryam:(She was in tears) That's not true, your mother is the best, even though Summayah is not saying anything. Mrs Hadizah tries her best everyday to talk to her about anything. She is sad seeing her in that state but all you do is ignore.  

Uthman:I didn't ignore Summayah and you know that. I love her so much, the reason why i decided to stay away was because of the people around us. They taunt her, just imagine if i was going in and out of her ward, it would escalate. I don't want more problems for her. 

Maryam:That is a lame excuse for me, have they stop taunting her?  All i want to say is that be a man and take responsibility. You have to stop hiding, be proud of her. She is a child, your gap age is wide and i can understand if you are ashamed of yourself.  Be. Responsible. You can't sit down here and expect her to be fine. You should have thought about the consequences before venturing into it, now that it has happened, find a solution to everything. 

Uthman:(He didn't know what he could say to her, he knew why Maryam reacted that way. She loved her dearly. Summayah has a good heart, she would surely be loved by everyone.) I... 

Maryam:I just want to beg you with the name of Allah, try to talk to her. After your confession, you didn't go back to see her. This is torture now, she is going through a lot and you are here doing nothing for her. 
You have to marry her if you don't want her to be humiliated any further. 

Uthman:I know i made a mistake and i am going to rectify it. I will check up on her. 

Maryam:I am sorry for my outburst, i couldn't stop myself from talking. Summayah has been a good girl from the onset and i can't bear to see her like that. A pregnant woman needs to be pampered but hers was horrible, suffering all through. She doesn't crave for anything, no talking about her feelings. She must have witnessed the first kick all alone, it would have been amazing if her partner was there to share the journey together. She is close to delivery, make her happy and alive. Take her out with your sister and daughter, let her enjoy life, bring that child back. Know what she wants and what she doesn't. 

Uthman:Thank you so much. I will do as you have said.

Maryam:Jazakillah khair.

Uthman:Wa antum fajazakillah khair. You did all this just because you love her so much. It shows how good hearted you are and i cant put my thoughts in words, thank you so much. 

Maryam:Hmm, i have to go now. 

Uthman:Okay. 

(As she walked out of his office, tears cascaded from her eyes. She wished everything was a dream but it wasn't, she told her heart it was the right thing to do. Summayah was like a sister to her, her happiness was her top priority. She needs uthman more than anyone else, Summayah was carrying his child and she couldn't be so selfish just because of her own love. She knew this was the right time for her to let go of her feelings, they weren't meant to be.)

"Yes, i did the right thing." She convinced herself.  "I will make sure Summayah is happy again. Someday, i will get to marry the man that has been destined for me." She wiped her face before proceeding to her office.

(Uthman was always at the entrance,he didn't have the intention of leaving her but he was so scared to see Summayah's sad face, scared to hear her shout at him or cry because of him like she did two months ago. He would always watch from afar everyday before going home, now he had to see her no matter what happens today. Maryam was right, Summayah needs him. As he was about to step in, the messenger he sent to get food for him stopped him. He gave him the food and uthman thanked him for it. He entered and saw her lying down with her back facing him.) 

Uthman:Summayah! Summayah!! (He moved to the other side of the bed to see if she was sleeping, she was actually sleeping. Uthman dropped the food pack, he was about to leave when Summayah woke up, her eyes widened as she saw him.) I...came to talk to you. 

Summayah:(Her eyes was filled with tears) Why...are... you...here. (She looked at her body to make sure it was fully covered.) Are...you...here to...touch...me? 

Uthman:I only came here to see how you were. You.... 

Summayah:Just...leave. 

Uthman:Summayah,calm down. I know you need a lot of explanation from me, isn't it? I want to clear your doubts and you will be going home soon. 

Summayah:I...don't have a home. 

Uthman:You do. Fadilah misses you a lot. 

Summayah:(She ignored what he said last) How...did you get to know me? I never met you for once except the day at the hotel, you claimed to be a saint. You never for once touched me and you expect me to believe your lies. Whenever i think about it, i know deep down that you only lied to save me, nothing else...

Uthman:I actually li...

Summayah:I know you lied, i was so stupid to have believed it when you said you are the father of my unborn child. I was so happy at first then i thought about how we met and it was not connecting at all. You are not the father of my child, you will never be. My child is fatherless, no fatherly care will be there. He is not coming for us, he is never coming back to say he is the one. He must be a coward, i really want to see him and ask why he r*ped me. Was it a crime for me to be a girl? Tell me what my crime was,please tell me. 

Uthman:(He didn't know if Summayah's r*pist was going to come out and confess, he didn't care if he did. He has to stand on his word, if he is going to show up or not. He is going to be his or her father no matter what, Summayah had a lot of expectations everyday of her life, Her unborn child unknown father. He wants to be that person even if it was stupid, he had to.) I wasn't lying when i said i was the rapist. 

Summayah:No...no... You are lying.( She shaked her head vigorously) 

Uthman:Do you want to know how i r*ped you? Do you? 

Summayah:Yes,i want to. (She burst out in tears) 

Uthman:(He had to lie to her for her to be at rest till she gives birth or when she is in a much better state.He remembered Summayah once told him the address of her house.) I drugged you when you were at home all alone. I couldn't resist your beauty the first time i saw you and all i wanted was to have you all to myself. I saw my wife in you, you were in your uniform and i followed you home. I got informations from your classmates that you were married and your husband was in the University. Tell me i was pained that i couldn't marry you, so i went for the other option which was r*pe. I
(She slapped him and struggled to breath) 

Summayah:You...r*ped... me... when... you knew i was married. 

Uthman:I am sorry. 

Summayah:It would never change, your sorry wouldn't change my status. It will not change the fact that i suffered. 

Uthman:I am ready to marry you, i am willing to be everything for you If you give me the chance to. 

Summayah:I thought you were a good man,  you look responsible that day at the hotel. You act like you don't know me at the hotel. You blamed my parents for coming to the hotel while you were the root cause. 

Uthman:I...I am sorry. When i rescued you that day and i saw the state you were in. I know the child was mine and I had to protect you from any evil. That was why i dropped one hundred thousand naira for you at the hotel. I felt guilty. 

Summayah:You are more disgusting, brother Uthman. I despise you right now. I hate you. (She was gasping for air, uthman tried touching her but she removed it.) Le...av...eme...a..lo...ne.

(Uthman didn't give in to her, as he held her again. She fainted into his arms, she was so fragile and he felt if she didn't faint into his arms she would have broken, Her lips was chapped and her temperature was high with her heart beat, beating faster than it should be. He lay her down gently before getting her treated. He covered her before sitting closely, he watched how Summayah has been. He was so confused on what was wrong and right, he only worsen her state of health while trying to help her.)

Summayah, no matter what you say to me. I will always be around to help you, you surely have a good heart and it will not take a longer time before you forgive me even if i didn't wrong you in anyway. That is why i love you, you are so kind hearted. I would do anything to win that heart back. She needs love and i will give her that,  in sha Allah.
